We invited Johnny Meatless to the studio to cook and he did not disappoint! This plant-based take on a Filipino Chicken Adobo was absolutely delicious, and we’ll be making this one time and time again.


Before you start

Large frying pan


  • 200g plant-based chicken
  • 1⁄2 cup soy sauce
  • 1⁄3 cup of vinegar
  • 1 tsp grounded pepper
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 tsp light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp peppercorn
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Steamed rice, to serve (optional)
  • 3-4 bay leaves
  • 1 medium onion, sliced


  1. 1.

    Mix your plant-based chicken with soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, bay leaves and garlic gloves, then let it marinate in the fridge for up to an hour

    Heat your pan and add vegetable oil

  3. 3.

    Add sliced onion and let it cook for 2-3 minutes, until it’s a transparent colour

  4. 4.

    Place your plant-based chicken into the pan and let it cook for 1-2 minutes, allowing both sides to cook

  5. 5.

    Pour in your remaining marinade and add extra garlic and bay leaves

  6. 6.

    Gradually pour in some water

  7. 7.

    Add brown sugar, peppercorns and salt, then let it simmer for another 5-8 minutes

    Serve hot with steamed rice
