Mezze Pizza Braid

There’s something about making dough from scratch that makes us feel homely, comforted and a bit like we’ve got our sh*t together. Y’know, like adults. So get your grown-up on and make this gorgeous pizza bread for your fellow grown-up friends to munch while sipping Merlot and talking about grown-up things like mortgages, loft extensions and car insurance.
This is a great veggie party food idea and also a great plant-based recipe to cook with kids!
Ingredients
For the pizza dough
- 1 cup strong bread flour
- 1.5g dried yeast
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 160ml lukewarm water
For the filling
- Tomato sauce
- Artichoke hearts
- Sun-dried tomatoes
- Roasted red peppers
- Pitted kalamata olives
- Basil leaves
For brushing
- Garlic oil
- Black pepper
To serve
- Hummus
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Oiled bowl
- Rolling pin
- Pastry brush
- Baking tray
Method

Put the yeast, salt and flour in a bowl, mix them together and make a well.

Pour the water into the well, mix everything together until you have a sticky dough.

Knead the dough on a clean, floured surface until you have a smooth dough ball. Then put the ball in an oiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave to rise for an hour.

Take the ball out of the bowl, cut it into three pieces, then roll the ball out into three flat sausage shapes on a floured surface.

Brush a thick line of tomato sauce down the middle of each sausage.

Lay out the artichoke, tomatoes, peppers, olives and basil onto the layers of tomato sauce.

Encase the filling ingredients in the dough so you have three fat sausages, turn the sausages over so they’re neat and tidy.

Attach your three sausages together by bringing the tops together and pinching them so that they stick.

Braid the three sausages together and pinch the ends together at the bottom so they stick. If you don't know how to braid, just ask anyone with daughters!

Brush with garlic oil. Bake the plait at 200℃ (392℉) for 20 minutes.

Take out of the oven and serve with hummus.
