This Portuguese sandwich has everything you could want; spicy vegan steak, tart red onion and juicy tomatoes. You really can't go wrong with these ingredients and it's one worth trying for a tasty lunch!


Before you start

Blender | Frying pan


  • Vegan steak
  • Vegan brioche rolls

For the marinade

  • 4 tbsp Peri-Peri sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Splash of olive oil.
  • 1 tsp sugar.
  • 1 tsp salt

For the chilli garlic butter

  • 100g vegan butter
  • 1 fresh chilli
  • 1 clove garlic
  • Fresh parsley
  • Pinch of salt

To serve

  • 1 beef tomato
  • Red onion


  1. 1.

    Make the marinade | Combine all the marinade ingredients into a blender and blitz until it’s a sauce like consistency | Set some aside to serve | Cover your vegan steaks in the marinade and set aside for at least 20 minutes

    Make the garlic chilli butter | Chop the garlic, parsley and chillies and mix in with the vegan butter with a pinch of salt | Set aside for later

    Fry the steaks | Cook the steaks according to package instructions | Once cooked, leave to rest for a few minutes before slicing into strips

    Prepare the sandwich | Butter your vegan rolls with the homemade butter and toast in a hot pan | Thinly slice your tomato and red onion | Add the sliced steak, tomato and onion and drizzle with a bit of leftover marinade
